Pictured above are Asa Dodsworth and Adriana Atema, one of the new entries on my site. Asa is my best pal Fred's oldest son and Adriana is Asa's Dutch-American girlfriend. Here's what Adriana and I sang at Christmas dinner at Paul and Marcia's:

S.S. Vallejo

I went to visit Heide today, to photograph her in the last few days on her houseboat the S.S. Vallejo a decommisioned ferry that used to travel the waters from the Bay to Sacramento way back whenever...
Heide is taking to higher/dryer ground, but I have associated her with that boat since she moved onto it eight years ago and I had to have a good pic or two of her on it. Certainly the photos don't do her or the boat justice but you can see that there's a whole of fun art on it, a chunk of it created by Steven Spear who has is as whacky as they come. There are wonderful imports from Heide and Eric's world travels. It has great ambiance, it's a fabulous party place and should probably be on a historical tour of Sausalito. The boat, after it was moored in Sausalito became the home for collage artist Jean Varda, and later for the sixties' era movers and shakers like Alan Watts, visitors Timothy Leary, Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. It has been taken over and refurbished by Eric Gullichsen and a band of dedicated roommates: NASA scientists, programmers, musicians and artists.
It's always fun to arrive in the gravel parking lot near the boat and leave a few hours later with the tide up to your wheel wells.

Here's to Heide and whatever crazywonderful place she finds herself.
I'll go visit.

Home is where the Bart is.... n't

There was a story in last Sunday's New York Times magazine about "irrational exuberance" in housing, and the story began with the house of Pieter Fransz built on the banks of the Herengracht in Amsterdam in 1625. I commented to Bonnie when I saw the article that it was probably a relative of mine, as my mother's given name is Lucie Edmé Fransz and we are of Dutch ancestry—I spoke to my mom this afternoon and she said we were indeed related to this Fransz fellow. But I doubt that I'll be able to take lodging there should I visit Amsterdam anytime soon, which I would love to do. Hey Bonnie—let's go. I know you wanna have some patat frite met pinda saus!

John Harold Lloyd III in Todd AO

No this isn't Todd, this is one of my oldest friends John Harold Lloyd III. Todd AO is one of my favorite aspect ratios. While the latest flat panel plasma TVs dazzle us with an aspect ratio of 16:9 (or 1.78:1) Todd AO created movies in the fifties with an aspect ratio of 2.2:1.

After I took this picture of Cyd in the studio, we went to lunch at PF Chang's and ordered some delicious Califasian food, Cyd asked, "Shall we order some wine?" I said, "well I'm not drinking at the moment, but you go ahead." She said, "No, I don't like to drink alone...
unless I am alone."
